Girardot, McElwee, Redhead, Chiang and Bergstedt all claimed medals at Falcon Open

U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - The Air Force fencers concluded the Falcon Open on Sunday, Oct. 20, at the Air Force Academy Cadet Gymnasium. On Sunday, Madeleine Girardot and Mary McElwee both shared in the women's foil titles as Girardot was the senior women's champion and McElwee the junior women's champion. The men's senior and junior division tournaments took place on Saturday (Oct. 19). Ryan Redhead, Alexander Chiang and Matthew Bergstedt all earned championship titles in their respective events.
On Saturday, the Air Force men captured three gold, and two bronze medals during the senior and junior men's competitions. Redhead was the senior men's saber champion with a 15-12 victory. Emerson Woerner was the bronze medalist who tied for third place.
On Sunday, Advancing to the semis in junior women's foil (under 20) were McElwee and teammate Waverly Hock. McElwee held the lead throughout the bout, eliminating her opponent, 15-3. After winning their semi rounds, Girardot and McElwee faced off once again in the junior's final round.
Earlier in the day, Girardot defeated McElwee in the title bout for the senior division. The two fencers kept the final bout very close with one point between them and keeping the score tied 7-7 into the third period, causing overtime. The battle continued until McElwee finally scored the winning touch, 8-7. The final finishes were, McElwee (first), Girardot (second) and Hock (third). Hock earned the bronze. Junior women's foil fielded six competitors.
Rachael Ferguson was the lone Air Force fencer in the junior women's epee tournament. She finished in fifth place among eight competitors.
In the senior division, Girardot was the overall winner in foil, McElwee took second place and Lauren Brooks finished in 10th place in the field of 10 women.
On Saturday (Oct. 19), Redhead, Chiang and Bergstedt all earned championship titles in their respective events. Redhead was the senior men's saber champion with a 15-12 victory. Woerner was the bronze medalist who tied for third place.
Chiang had continued success in earning the gold winning his third gold medal for the season. He won the championship bout, 15-4. James Salem was the bronze winner tied for third place in senior men's epee. Salem and Alexander Elwers were both knocked out in the semifinals. Salem lost 15-11 and Elwers lost 15-12.
Senior men's foil had the largest showing of competitors with 56 men competing. The foil and saber tournaments fielded 18 and 13, respectively.
Bergstedt, who fenced unattached, captured the junior men's saber championship title (15-13). Bergstedt also competed unattached in senior men's saber and finished in eighth place. Elias Johnson finished in sixth place in men's epee. Garrett Turley and Daniel Johnson competed in men's foil finishing 11th and 16th, respectively.
The field of competitors in junior men's epee was 26 fencers strong. Junior saber field 12, while foil had only six competitors.
The fencing team will practice at home for the next few weeks before traveling to the Division I and Junior NAC in Cleveland, Ohio, Nov. 8-11.
