U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. -- The Air Force Academy fencers competed in the first national team qualifying event of the season at the Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, on October 15-18. The USA Fencing North American Cup A (NAC) tournament held 42 events with individual competitions in all three fencing weapons - epee, foil and saber. The Academy's fencers competed in the Division I and Division II tournaments. The Academy's top fencers included freshman Juli Nokleberg (Los Angeles, CA.) in the Division II Women's Epee tournament. Nokleberg took 12th place among 87 competitors. In the Division I Men's Foil competition, freshman Daniel Cohen (Scarsdale, NY) finished in 11th place among 180 fencers. In Division I Men's Epee, one of the tournaments largest field of competitors (253), senior Daniel Trapani (Houston, TX), finished in 11th place, his best finish ever in a national team qualifying event. Junior Simone Barrette (Louisville, KY) placed 17th in the Division I Women's Epee division among 127 fencers. "We had a good tournament overall," said Head coach Abdel Salem. "Four of our fencers competing for a higher national ranking made point this weekend so their seasons are off to a good start." In Division I Women's Saber, sophomore Heather Nelson (Clifton Park, NY) finished 24th out of 90 competitors. Senior Nick Stockdale (Lansdowne, PA) finished 94th in the Division I Men's Foil tournament. Freshman Chase Houser (Sunnyvale, CA) finished 120th in Division I Men's Epee.
