The Academy is sending its fencing squad to compete in the North American Cup, Oct. 8-10, in Atlanta, Ga. U.S. Fencing hosts this Division II, cadet and Youth-14 level tournament with over 500 competitors in men's and women's epee, foil and saber. The Georgia World Congress Center is the venue for the tournament.
Competing for Air Force at the Division II level are Josh Trice, Sam Bartron and Pappy Oboho in men's saber, while Marisa Romero and Caitlin Young will fence women's saber. AFA's foil competitors are Ebony Cook, Kent Morgan and Carl Chen. In epee, Sean Andrews, Brynn Thoreson and Adam Schenk are competing.
Head coach Abdel Salem is traveling with an experienced group of fencers. Trice, Bartron, Oboho, Romero Cook, Morgan, Chen and Andrews are all returning fencers from 2003-04. Thoreson fenced for the Academy's Prep School and competed in the Nick Toth Open last fall. Before attending the Academy, Young fenced for the Fencing Club of Long Island and the Fencers Club in New York City. Schenk fenced for the Twin Cities Fencing Club in his hometown, Cottage Grove, Minn.
"This is our first out-of-state competition of the year, and the NAC will provide good experience for our team. Both veterans and freshman will benefit from the quality competition they will face," assistant coach Bob Taylor said.
