Falcons bring the home medals from the Amarillo Open

    U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - At the 14th Annual Amarillo Open, the Air Force fencers came home with gold, silver and bronze medals in their respective events. The Amarillo Open took place in Texas on September 28-29.

    Representing the Academy in the Amarillo Open was James Salem, who was 6-0 in pools of 42 fencers leading up to the senior mixed epee championship bout. Salem proceeded through the tables, with a bye, 15-3, 15-6, 15-9, 11-7 and finally winning the gold medal bout 12-13 in overtime.

    Alexander Chiang was the senior mixed foil champion. He advanced through the 18-fencers pools with a 5-0 record. Chiang, Madeleine Girardot and Mary McElwee all did battle to reach the number one spot on the winner's podium. Chiang advanced 15-3, 15-3, 15-10 and finally 15-9 in final bout against Girardot who finished as the runner up. McElwee finished tied for third place after losing 15-10 to Chiang in the semi-finals.

    Ryan Redhead was the senior mixed saber winner with a 3-1 pool record. He advanced 15-2, 15-6. He won the final about against teammate Matthew Bergstedt, 15-9. Bergstedt, who was the runner up in the tournament, had a 4-0 pool record. Bergstedt entered the finals after winning in the semi-finals against his opponent from the Double T Fencing Club. Emerson Woerner tied for third place after losing in the semis to Redhead, 7-15.



    In the senior women's foil championship, Girardot, McElwee and Alisa Chernomashentsev went to battle for first place. It was Girardot who came out on top with a 7-0 pool record and a 15-6 victory versus McElwee (6-1 record) who finished as the women's runner up. McElwee's wins were 15-0 and 15-7 leading to the finals. Chernomashentsev, who had a 4-2 pool record, finished tied for third place. Girardot's victories included a 15-1 against AF's Lauren Brooks, 15-7, and the final bout, 15-6. Chernomashentsev lost, 7-15, to McElwee in the semis.

    Other top finishers included Elias Johnson who placed third among the 31 competitors in the junior mixed epee tournament. Jessica Steuber finished third among 18 women fencers in the senior epee tournament.

    Next up is the North American Cup Division II tournament in Milwaukee, WI, on Oct. 11-14.
