Air Force Fencers Open the Season with Nick Toth Open
Sept. 26, 2003 The Academy fencing team will host the annual Nick Toth Open this weekend, Sept 27-28 at the Cadet West Gymnasium. The action begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Fans should enter the Academy at the Northgate and park in the Field House east parking lot. This weekend's competition is also open to the under 8 - 14 fencers. Following a strong last season in the Western Region, the women's sabre team returns junior Marisa Romero and sophomores Alison Freiman, Amber Park and Erin Shaw. In women's foil, senior Apphia Taylor, junior Ebony Cook, sophomore Natalie Chounet and Elizabeth Gondek are the team's experienced fencers. The women's epee team is comprised of two sophomores, Kate Strickland and Elizabeth Jaszczak. Newcomers Nathaniel Smith, Kent Morgan, Carl Chen, Julio Gamez and Ryan Sealy will fence men's foil in 2003-04. Tim French, Curtis Marshall, Serge Mettes, Gian-Carlo Rando and freshman Jason Stockdale are the men's epee team. Returning to sabre action are Joshua Trice, Pappy Oboho and Sam Bartron. In October, the Falcons will travel to Overland Park, Kan., for the first North American Cup competition of the season. Following the NAC Division II, the team will compete in Santa Fe, N.M. Oct. 10-13 8 a.m. NAC Division II, Overland Park. Kan. Oct. 25-26 8 a.m. New Mexico Open, Santa Fe, N.M.
