Air Force Fencers Open Season with the Nick Toth Open


    The Academy's fencing team will open the 2004-05 season hosting the annual Nick Toth Open, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 25-26 at 10 a.m. in the Cadet Gym (center gym). The two-day event is open to the public.

    Air Force has 20 letter winners returning to the strip from last season. Head coach Abdel Salem has compiled a team of 50 cadets which includes freshman recruits Erinn Woodside, Adam Schenk, Elizabeth Enyart and Caitlin Young.

    This year's fencing team captains are seniors Marisa Romero from Allen, Texas, Ebony Cook from Orangeburg, S.C. and Edemumo Oboho from Laurenceville, Ga.

    Salem is very excited about the new season and expects it to be better than last year. "Our roster is full of powerful fencers. As usual epee is our strength, but I am warning everyone that our foil and saber teams are catching up."

    2004-2005 Schedule: The season will be very busy. Salem has scheduled duals at Duke, Stanford, and San Diego as well as all the U.S. Fencing Association North American Cups, adding to that the local events at the Academy and in Santa Fe, N.M. The Falcons' first home event is September 25-26 with the annual Nick Toth Open at 10 a.m. The Academy hosts the U.S. Military Championships on November 14 (12:00) with a dual versus Army at 10 a.m. The Falcon Open is scheduled for December 4-5 at 10 a.m. Stanford University host the Western Region Championships, March 5-6 and the NCAA Fencing Championships will be in Houston, Texas on March 17-20.
