The Air Force Academy fencing team opens the season by hosting the Nick Toth Open on Sept. 8-9, 2012. Competition begins at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the USAFA Cadet Gymnasium (East Gym). This event is free and open to the public.

Air Force Academy Fencing Team begins a new season:

"I'm looking forward to the 2012-2013 season", said head coach Abdel Salem. "I think the team will do well and have fun. We have wonderful leaders on the team and good freshmen. We are also very excited about our wonderful new fencing facility."

Returning this season are team captains Dalton Boatright and Olivia Prosseda, both fence epee. Also returning on the men's team are Scott Pippin (saber), Nathan Sorensen (epee), Chase Houser (epee), Emerson Woerner (saber), Alexander Chiang (foil), and Emiliano Kaptain (saber). The returning women are Ashley Chung (foil), Rachel Cranfill (foil), Vianca Torres (foil), Tara Zartman (epee), Allison Egan (saber), Desirae Ionata (saber), and Jessica Steuber (epee).

Joining the team are recruited cadets, Madeleine Girardot (foil), Mary McElwee (foil), Matthew Bergstedt (saber), John Dilorenzo (foil), Adam Marcinkowski (saber), Ryan Redhead (saber) and James Salem (epee). The freshmen will give the much needed support to the teams following the departure of the class of 2012.

The team will travel to several North American Cup tournaments between September 2012 and July 2013. In September, the team will compete in the annual Amarillo Open in Texas, September 29-30. The New Mexico Open is scheduled for Oct. 20-21 in Santa Fe, N.M. The Falcons' next home tournament is the Falcon Open, Nov. 3-4. The Western Invitational is in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 12, while Feb. 23-24 is the Notre Dame Dual Meet in South Bend. The NCAA Regionals will be hosted by San Diego State University on March 9-10, with the NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Championships on March 21-24 in San Antonio, Texas.
