On Saturday, the Air Force Academy fencing team concluded the first day of competition at the North American Cup in Virginia Beach, Va. Sophomore Simone Barrette placed seventh in Division 1 Women's Epee, marking her second top-eight finish in Division 1 competition this season. Senior Michael O'Connor competed in Division 1 Men's Saber, his last tournament in the Falcon uniform, but did not qualify for the direct elimination play after finishing 1-5 in pools.

Barrette posted a 4-1 record in pools and was seeded 25th heading into direct elimination play. She defeated her first three opponents in the direct elimination tableau, earning a spot in the quarterfinals before fencing Kelley Hurley, a 2008 Olympian and 2008 NCAA champion. Hurley won the bout 15-7.

"Simone fenced well all day," said assistant coach Timothy French. "She was mentally prepared to do her best and I am proud of her top-eight finish. She has shown great improvement this year and concluded the season with a superb result."

The competition resumed on Sunday, with junior Daniel Trapani, sophomore Benjamin Rinaldi and freshman Nathan Sorensen competing in Division 1 Men's Epee. Freshman Heather Nelson will also fence in Division 1 Women's Saber.

Nelson finished 37th among 68 in saber. Trapani took 34th among the 218 men's epee fencers, while Sorenson and Rinaldi finished 125th and 153rd, respectively.
