U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - (March 21-24) Freshmen James Salem and Mary McElwee from the Air Force Academy competed in the NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Championships in San Antonio. Salem finished 19th overall in individual men's epee and McElwee finished 15th in women' foil. The Air Force squad finished 20th with 20 points.
On Thursday, after the first four rounds of the epee tournament, Salem was in 22nd place with a six bouts won. Salem scored 57 touches and received 80 (-23 Indicator). On Friday, Salem moved up to 19th place with nine of his 23 bouts won (.391) 74 TS, 94 TR and a -20 indicator.
The individual women's foil championships took place on Saturday and Sunday. Following all 23 bouts, McElwee finished 15th overall with 11 of her 23 bouts won (.478) she had 75 TS, 81 TR and a -6 indicator.
"Our freshmen did okay for their first national competition," said head coach Abdel Salem. "This is their first participation in the NCAAs and it is a very competitive competition. They will improve over the years and I expect that they will return and move up in the placement."
