Salem Finishes 19th in NCAA Fencing National Championships

    U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - (March 21-22) Freshman James Salem from the Air Force Academy fencing team competed in the individual men's epee tournament on Thursday and Friday at the NCAA Men's Fencing Championships in San Antonio.

    On Thursday, after round 4 in the men's epee tournament, Salem was in 22nd place with six of 19 bouts won (.316). In the first four rounds Salem scored 57 touches and received 80 (-23 Ind.). The men's competition continued on Friday with rounds 5-7, the semifinals and the championship bouts. On Friday, Salem finished 19th overall with nine of his 23 bouts won (.391) 74 TS, 94 TR and a -20 indicator.

    With only two fencers competing in the championships, Air Force remains in 20th place with only nine points (men's) thus far. The Pennsylvania State University men's team remains in the lead with 94 points.

    The women's individual championships take place between Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24. Academy freshman Mary McElwee competes in the individual women's foil tournament.
