Air Force Fencer Simone Barrette finished 23rd at NCAAs

Complete Release in PDF Format The 2009 NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Championships concluded today, Sunday, March 22 in Pennsylvania. Air Force Academy freshman Simone Barrette finished 23rd in her first national collegiate championship of her Academy career. Air Force finished with a combined team 16th place with 32 points overall, with 32 points in men's epee and four points in women's epee. Air Force's Daniel Trapani and Peter French both earned second-team All-American honors. In the men's tournament, Trapani finished in fifth place while French finished in seventh-place both scored 14 points each. "I am very proud of our three fencers," said head coach Abdel Salem. "Daniel and Peter did very well going up against some very tough opponents. This is Peter's second All-American title. Simone had some tough competitors, and I expect that she will be a strong force for our team in the future." Penn State was the national champion with an overall score of 195 points followed by Notre Dame (182) and Ohio State (166). Following the Spring break, the Falcons will travel to Portland, Ore., to compete in the Division I North American Cup, April 24-27.
