U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. Feb 17-20 - Two student-athletes from the Air Force Academy traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah, this past weekend to compete in the 2012 Junior Olympic Fencing Championships, U20, U17., U20TM. Freshmen Alexander Chiang (men's foil) and Emiliano Kaptain (men's saber) finished in the top 50 of the highly competitive junior men's foil and saber divisions.
Chiang was seeded 83 among 171 foil competitors and finished in 28th place. Chiang competed in pool #11 and recorded bouts of 5-0, 2-5, 2-5, 5-0, 5-0 and 1-5. Chiang lost in direct elimination to his opponent from California, 6-15. In the pool, Chiang recorded stats of three victories, 20 touches scored, 16 touches received with an indicator of +4 and placed #4 in the pool.
Kaptain was seeded tied for 41st and finished 47th among the pools of 149 sabers. Kaptain advanced through the pools until he lost to his opponent from New Jersey, 11-15, in direct elimination. Kaptain's stats included bouts of 5-0, 3-5, 5-0, 5-0, 3-5 and 5-0. He scored four victories, 26 TS, 15 TR, Ind. +11 and placed #3 in the pool.
The Air Force fencers will be on a short break until March 10-11 when the team travels to Los Angeles, Calif., for the NCAA West Regional Championships.
