U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - Several Air Force fencers traveled to Portland, Ore., this weekend to participate in the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships, Feb. 14-17. Air Force fencers Alyssa Hofilena finished 16th and was the team's top performer in the junior women's saber tournament.
After a 3-3 pool record in saber, Hofilena advanced from table 128 with a 15-12 victory. Advancing in tables 64 and 32 and with victories of 15-8 and 15-12, respectively, she finally placed 16th in table 16 after losing 15-5.
McElwee recorded five victories with 22 touches scored in pools and advance to table 64 on a bye. She won that bout 15-2 and advanced into table 32 and eventually lost the bout 15-11. She finished the tournament ranked 24th among 126 fencers.
Salem advanced with a 4-2 pool record having scored 22 touches with 14 received and an +8 indicator. Seeded #47, Salem received a bye into table 128, and in that round, he fenced off against another fencer also on a bye. Salem won the bout 15-5 and entered into table 64. Salem lost the bout 15-8 and finished the competition in 43rd place. The junior men's epee tournament fielded 193 fencers from around the country.
The fencing team's upcoming competition is the NCAA Western Regional Championships, March 8-9 in California.
