U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - The Air Force fencers traveled to Durham, N.C. this past weekend to compete in the Duke Meet against No. 8 Temple, Brandeis University, North Carolina, MIT, Duke and St. Johns University. It was tough competition for the Air Force fencers; still, the women's team posted a 2-3 record against their opponents, Temple, Brandeis, UNC, MIT and Duke. The Falcon men failed to post any victories against Brandeis, MIT, Duke, UNC and Johns Hopkins, finishing 0-5.

The bright spot of the day was the women's foil team of Mary McElwee, Madeleine Girardot and Waverly Hock. The trio won the women's foil team trophy with a 4-1 foil team record. They also beat the No. 8 Temple foil team by 1 point (5-4). McElwee finished with an 11-4 record. Girardot finished 11-4, and Hock finished 8-7.

"The women's foil team has become one of Air Force's strongest competitors in decades," said Assistant coach Mike Hall. "Winning the women's foil trophy is a first for our team. I am very proud of their success. Waverly surprised us with her performance this past weekend. She came out strong against her opponents."

"Alyssa and Alex had the best records at this meet, and that says a lot for our fencers," said Head coach Abdel Salem. The women did okay, and the men fought strong against their opponents, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us with these two young teams."

Alyssa Hofilena finished with a 13-2 record and came out strong against her opponents in the women's saber bouts; as did Alexander Chiang who also finished with a 13-2 record in the men's foil division.
