NCAA Fencing Tournament--Day One Results
Feb. 2, 2002 U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - The Falcons concluded day one of the NCAA fencing tournament at the Academy's cadet gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 2. Sunday's matches will start at 10:00 a.m. In the women's events, Air Force's losses came against Duke, 9-18, Northwestern, 8-19, and Notre Dame, 8-19. The Falcons beat Fullerton, 23-4. In the men's competition, the Falcons were victorious over Duke, 18-9, Northwestern, 22-5, Fullerton, 24-3, and lost to Notre Dame, 7-20. "We competed against some very strong schools today," head coach Abdel Salem said. "I am very happy with our fencers. They all gave 100 percent with each match. Our top fencers today were Seth Kelsey, Elia Burrill and Andrea Rix. Chris Jones showed a lot of strength against some of the top people in the nation," Salem said. On Friday night, the Falcons swept an exhibition with Duke University. In the women's event, Burrill defeated Kristina Schafer, 5-3, in epee. Rix defeated Nancy Cheng, 5-3, in sabre. Margaret Kucia, Air Force, defeated Nyasha London, 5-3, in foil. The Air Force women won 15-9.
In the men's event, Kelsey defeated Sean Huang, Duke, 5-3, epee. Eric
Lathrop, Air Force, defeated Andrew Mahen, 5-4, in sabre. In the final
match of the evening, Air Force foil fencer Ryan Dunn defeated Justin
Maggio, 5-2. The men's final score was Air Force 15, Duke 9.
