U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - The Air Force Academy fencing teams topped off the weekend with an impressive 13-3 dual meet record. The men's team finished with a 7-1 dual meet record at the Notre Dame Duals in South Bend on Sunday. The women's team had a 6-2 record from Saturday's competition.
On Sunday, the men's victories came against Swarthmore (25-2), Wayne State (21-6), Lawrence (25-2), Cleveland State (21-6), Northwestern (21-6) and Florida (26-1). Notre Dame defeated Air Force, 21-6. The men's epee team posted a 5-2 mark, the foil team went 6-1, while the saber team finished with a 5-2 record.
All of the Air Force men competing finished the day with positive bout records. The Air Force standouts were senior Daniel Trapani and freshman Chase Houser with 17-4 bout records in men's epee. Freshman Daniel Cohen had a 17-2 bout record in men's foil and both sophomore Scott Pippin and freshman Emerson Woerner had a 16-5 record in men's saber.
The women's fencing team enjoyed a successful day as the Falcons posted a 6-2 dual record on Saturday. Sophomore Heather Nelson was the team's top fencer with a 21-0 bout record in women's saber. Freshman Juli Nokleberg had a strong finish in the women's epee meet with a 17-3 bout record, while senior Simone Barrette had a 17-4 record. Going against one of the nation's top teams, Nokleberg went 2-1 in the bouts against her opponents from Notre Dame.
The women got their six victories over Florida (16-11), Swarthmore (20-7), Lawrence (16-11), Wayne State (15-12), Detroit (26-1) and Cleveland State (23-4). The women lost to seventh-ranked Northwestern University (20-7) and top-ranked Notre Dame (21-6). The epee team posted a 5-2 mark, in foil 2-5, while the saber team finished 6-2 on the day.
Air Force fencers will travel to Dallas, Texas, for the NAC Junior Olympics, Feb. 17-22.
