Girardot, Chiang, and Salem finish in the top of their divisions at NAC

U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - Air Force fencers Madeleine Girardot, Alexander Chiang and James Salem were the school's top finishers in the North American Cup (NAC) Division 1 and Junior fencing tournaments in Virginia Beach, Va., this past weekend. Girardot finished 14th overall among 119 top fencers from around the country in the junior women's foil division. Chiang finished 15th in Division 1 men's foil among 172 fencers. Salem finished 30th in men's epee among the field of 255 fencers in the Division 1 category.
"The NAC served as a key component for the selection of athletes for the Senior World Championships as well as the Junior and Cadet World Championships. More than 1,200 competitors, including Olympians and Paralympians from the London Games, competed at the Virginia Beach Convention Center from Jan. 18 to Jan. 20.," according to 10 WAVY.com.
Girardot also finished 63rd in Division 1 women's foil. Salem finished 73rd in junior men's epee.
Air Force fencers Alyssa Hofilena fenced in the junior women's saber competition on Monday, Jan. 20. She finished 85th overall. She also competed in the Division 1 competition on Saturday, Jan. 18 and finished 92nd.
Matthew Bergstedt finished 53rd among 138 competitors in the junior men's saber tourney on Friday, Jan. 17, and finished 133rd in Division 1 on Sunday, Jan. 19.
The Air Force fencers will Durham, N.C., for the Duke Invitational, Feb. 8-9.
