On Jan. 8, 2011, the Air Force Academy fencing team traveled to California to compete in the team's first collegiate competition of the season, the Western Invitational hosted by UC San Diego. The men's foil team had the best performance with an impressive 37-8 record against their opponents. Overall, the men's team went 4-1, while the women's team finished 1-3 against Stanford University, CalTech, University of California San Diego, University of Florida and Northwestern University.

"In general, it was a successful tournament. I was hoping that we would be able to get one more victory against UCSD from the women's team to beat them, but they fought hard. The men's foil team did a very good job. Hopefully we will do better at Notre Dame at the end of the month," said head coach Abdel Salem.

Individually, Air Force's top performers were Daniel Cohen (14-1), Nick Stockdale (14-1), Heather Nelson (13-2), Simone Barrette (10-2), and Scott Pippin (10-2).

Falcons will travel to Dallas, Texas, Jan. 13-18 for NAC Division I/Junior Tournament.
