Air Force fencing had three competitors at the December Div. I/II North American Cup (NAC) in Portland, Ore. The four day event was Fri.-Mon., Dec. 8-11. Sophomore Leanne Singleton-Comfort led the way with a third place finish out of 78 competitors in the Div. I women’s saber.
Singleton-Comfort went 8-1 in competition Friday, competing against some of nations’ best. She posted a win in the quarterfinals over Francesca Russo of Notre Dame, who was the 2017 NCAA Women’s Saber Champion. The sophomore was eliminated in the semifinals, 15-14, by three-time Olympian Dagmara Wozniak. Singleton-Comfort renewed her A rating to get an A2017.
Senior Lauren Sides also has a strong performance in the saber, placing 54th. Sides posted a win over the first-place seed after pool competition. Sides received a silver medal and earned her B rating for B2017.
On Monday, sophomore Helen Landwehr placed 48th out of 129 competitors in the Div. I women’s epee.
Air Force is off from competition for the remainder of 2017. The Falcons resume competition in 2018 at the Div. I/Junior NAC Jan. 5-8 in Virginia Beach, Va.
