AFA Fencers experience success in New Mexico

Air Force fencers had a successful competition at the New Mexico Open last weekend. During the two-day tournament, Sept. 27-28, several Academy fencers ruled their respective tournaments in the open senior mixed and open senior women's competitions. Tournament champions were sophomore Nick Stockdale, freshmen Simone Barrett, Libby De La Torre, junior Michael O'Connor and newcomer Cody Mattern.

In mixed foil, Stockdale was the overall winner and freshman Phil Choy tied for third place.

In women's epee, Barrette was the tournament winner, while sophomore Jennifer Nolta took sixth place. Nolta also earned her E08 rating in the US Fencing Association (USFA). Ninth place went to sophomore Nicole Flint.

In women's saber, sophomore Rebecca Bodtke was the second-place finisher and senior Angelica Plazas tied for third place. Sixth place went to newcomer Rachel Burk.

In women's foil, De La Torre won the competition, while seniors Ainsley Allen took fifth place, and Julie Luce finished in eighth place.

In mixed saber, O'Connor won the event and freshman Geoffrey Pamerleau followed in second place. Junior Anthony Lorenzini tied for third place and earned his E08 rating in USFA. Stockdale also came in at fifth place and sophomore Chris Daniels followed in sixth place.

In mixed epee, the top three positions went to Mattern, senior Peter French in second place and sophomore Daniel Trapani, who tied for third place.
