Two Fencers Qualify for NCAAs

    USAF Academy, Colo. - Two Air Force Academy fencers qualified for the 2008 NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Championships. AFA sophomore Peter French and freshman Daniel Trapani both qualified for the NCAAs Sunday afternoon at the Western Regional Fencing Championships at Cal State Fullerton, March 2. The two Falcons qualified in the men's individual epee tournament, finishing first and second, respectively. Both earned all-region honors. Freshman Nick Stockdale, men's foil, earned an alternate spot, finishing in fifth place. Senior Collette Bannister finished fourth in women's foil and also earned an alternate spot.

    "Our men's epee team dominated the regional tournament and we had two fencers take first and second place for all-region and qualified for the NCAAs," said head coach Abdel Salem.

    Also finishing in the top 10, were sophomore Michael O'Connor in men's saber, he finished seventh. Senior Myramn Ruth finished fifth in women's saber and earned all-region honors, while junior Angelica Plazas placed sixth. In women's epee, senior Eliza Enyart placed fifth to earn all-region honors. Senior Brynn Thoreson placed seventh in epee. Senior Fred Meyer finished 11th in men's epee. The NCAA championships will be held in Columbus, Ohio, March 13-15.

    Women's Epee: Eliza Enyart, Air Force - 5th, Brynn Thoreson, Air Force - 7th
    Men's Foil: alternate: Nicholas Stockdale, Air Force - 5th
    Women's Foil: alternate: Collette Bannister, Air Force - 4th
    Men's Saber:  Michael O'Connor, Air Force - 7th
