Air Force Fencing Competes at Duke

Air Force fencing competed at the Duke meet over the weekend of Feb. 11-12, in Durham, N.C. The men’s team went 2-3 on Saturday and the women’s team followed with a 2-3 mark on Sunday.

In Saturday’s men’s action, the Falcons defeated Johns Hopkins (18-9) and MIT (15-12), with losses to Boston College (15-12), #9 Duke (21-6) and North Carolina (18-9).

Freshman Jordan Griffith led the way for the Air Fore, going 13-2 in the foil. Freshman Travis Amsbaugh went 8-4 in the epee and senior Alexander Elwers went 9-5 in the epee as well.

In Sunday’s women’s action, the Falcons defeated Boston College (14-13) and MIT (16-11), with defeats against #8 Northwestern (17-10), #10 Duke (21-6) and North Carolina (16-11).

Leading the way was sophomore Leanne Singleton-Comfort, who went 14-1 on the day in the saber. Freshman Helen Landwehr went 9-6 in the epee and senior Alyssa Hofilena went 9-6 in the saber as well.

The women’s team is now 10-9 on the season and the men’s team is 7-11.

Air Force returns to action next weekend at the Junior Olympics in Kansas City, Mo., running Fri.-Mon., Feb. 17-20.
