Air Force in Northwestern Duals - Day 1

U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - Jan. 30, 2016:  The Air Force men’s and women’s fencing teams participated in the Northwestern Duals at the University of Notre Dame on Saturday.  Against some of the top teams in the nation, the Falcon women went 1-6, and the men were 1-3 during the first day.  The women defeated Lawrence University with an impressive 21-6 record.  The men were victorious against Wayne State, 25-2.  Fencing competition continues Sunday at the Castellan Family Fencing Center.

The Falcons’ highlights for the day included the women’s squads going 7-2 in foil, 8-1 in saber, and 6-3 in epee against Lawrence.  In day 1, senior Mary McElwee was 12-2 in foil, and junior Alyssa Hofilena was 13-8 in saber.

Against Wayne State, the men’s foil squad of freshman Nicholas Pollack, junior Alexander Elwers, freshmen Morgan Geneste and Michael Bonneau were undefeated, 9-0.  Both the epee and saber teams were 8-1, 8-1.  In foil, Geneste had an individual record of 9-3, while junior Ryan Andrieux and senior Matthew Bergstedt were both 5-4 for the day in saber.
