Capt James Lotspeich joined the Academy's fencing program in 2007 as an assistant coach and officer representative. Lotspeich, a native of El Paso, Texas, graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in computer science. In 2003, he earned his master's degree in computer engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology, Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio. The captain is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at the Academy.
Lotspeich's computer science interests include artificial intelligence, evolutionary algorithms, high performance computers and UAF control algorithms.
Before coming to the Academy, the captain's military assignments included being the officer in charge, help desk, 72nd Communications Squadron, Tinker AFB, Okla., from 1999-2000. He was the executive officer for the 72nd Mission Support Group at Tinker from 2000-01. From 2003-04, he was element chief, Command Communications Security, 82nd Communications Support Squadron, and flight commander, Air Combat Command Postal Operations, 82nd Communications Support Squadron from 2004-06, Langley AFB, Va.
