Admissions

BASIC ELIGIBILITY
Admission standards for the United States Air Force Academy are high compared to most civilian universities. To be eligible for consideration, you must be a United States citizen, unmarried without dependents, have good moral character and be at least 17 and not past 22 years of age on July 1 of the year you would like to enter. You must qualify as an applicant and receive a nomination from an authorized source.

ADMISSIONS PROCESS
Requesting an application is the first step in the admissions process. You may request it after Jan. 31 of your junior year of high school. Do not request it prior to that time. If you are past your junior year, you should request an application immediately. Your completed application will be used to evaluate your potential for admission.

NOMINATING CATEGORIES
Before you can be considered for an appointment, you must obtain a nomination in one of the authorized nominating categories. To enter the Academy immediately after graduation from high school you should apply for a nomination during the second semester of your junior year or as soon as possible thereafter. To increase your chances of receiving a cadet appointment, you may apply in all the categories under which you are eligible for consideration.

CONGRESSIONAL NOMINATIONS
Each U.S. Senator and Representative is authorized to have a maximum of five cadets attending the Academy at one time. For each cadet vacancy that occurs, the member of Congress may nominate a maximum of 10 candidates to be considered for the appointment. You may request a nomination from both of your U.S. Senators and from the Representative of your congressional district. You must be a resident of the state or congressional district in which you are applying, but it's not necessary to know your member of Congress personally. Each congressional office has its own procedures and close-out dates for accepting applications. Most congressional offices prefer that you apply in the spring or summer of the year before you desire to enter the Academy. Some offices will accept applications through the fall. Congressional nominations may be submitted to the Academy as late as Jan. 31, but the majority are received before that deadline.

OTHER NOMINATING CATEGORIES
Other categories are Vice Presidential, the nomination of cadets at large by the Vice President of the United States; and Military Service-Connected appointments in the following categories: Presidential, Children of Deceased or Disabled Veterans, Children of Medal of Honor recipients, Air Force Regular and Reserve Components, Honor Military Schools and Air Force ROTC.

CANDIDATE SELECTION
Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of these factors: examination scores, ratings of previous academic performance, leadership potential as indicated by extracurricular activities and work experiences and recommendations of appropriate authorities. Principle nominees and highly qualified candidates may be notified of their appointments as soon as they meet all entrance requirements. Early notifications begin in November and continue through March. Candidates who have not received early appointments are considered in April if their records are complete. All candidates are notified of their qualification status no later than May.
