Air Force drops Game Two against New Mexico

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- It was too little too late for the Falcons on Saturday, as the visiting Lobos proved potent in the early innings defeating Air Force 11-5.

In the nine-hole, Trayden Tamiya led all Air Force hitters with 3 hits, including a RBI double in the 8th. Gabriel Garcia was 2-5 with a RBI single in the 7th. Aerik Joe finished 1-2 with a run-scoring single in the 8th, also reaching base with a walk.

Jay Thomason was 1-4, as his solo home run in the 7th gives him seven home runs over his last five games.

Rob Martin made his sixth start of 2022, and was pulled after 3.2 innings. Tagged with his second loss the year, the senior was charged with five runs on five hits, three walks and two strikeouts.

New Mexico opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd, as a leadoff walk was immediately followed by a RBI double from Willie Cano to give the Lobos a 1-0 lead. In the 4th, Cano led off the frame with a triple, and scored two batters later after a base hit.

Following a sac bunt and RBI ground out, Martin saw a RBI single end his day with two outs in the 4th and Air Force trailing 4-0. Duke Benge entered in relief to try to end the inning, but allowed three-consecutive hits, including a two-run home run as the Falcons trailed 7-0 heading into the bottom of the 4th.

The Lobos added three more in the 6th, as Bradley Runion swatted a three-run shot over the left field fence to extend the visiting lead to 10-0. The Falcons later trailed 11-0 as the result of a RBI double in the 7th.

Air Force did manage to score five runs in the 7th and 8th, but the deficit proved too large to erase.

The Falcons and Lobos will look to claim the rubber game on Sunday, March 27, with first-pitch scheduled for 12:00 pm MT.
