USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - After using an Academy-record clearance of 5'9¼" to claim the women's first-ever high jump title at the Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships last weekend, senior Rachel Herald was named the Air Force Athlete of the Week on Monday, May 19. It is the second such award of the season for Herald.
The native of Rockford, Mich., added a half-inch to her own Academy record during her title-winning performance on May 17, after she cleared the 5'9¼" bar on her first attempt. After passing on the opening height, Herald cleared the next five bars on her first attempt.
In addition to resetting the Academy record for the third time this outdoor season, Herald became the women's first-ever high jump champion ... just two months after becoming the program's first all-conference selection in that event following a runner-up performance at the MW Indoor Championships.
Herald was one of three conference champions for the Falcons' track and field program this weekend at the MW meet in Laramie, Wyo., joining freshman Taylor Smith (men's high jump) and junior Joey Uhle (men's pole vault).
