WEST POINT, N.Y. - Senior Stephen Bittner and sophomore Jacob Berggren captured NCBA championship titles on Saturday, April 5, as the Air Force boxing team earned a second-place finish in the team standings at the 39th National Collegiate Boxing Association Championships.
Competing in the finals of the 125-pound division, Bittner decisioned Army's Tyler Payne for his first NCBA title belt. Berggren claimed his first national title two bouts later, winning the 139-pound final with a decision over Nevada's JJ Mariano. For his efforts over the weekend, Berggren was awarded the Academy's Boxer of the Week honors.
Two other members of the Air Force boxing team earned silver medals during tonight's finals at West Point, as sophomore Mateus Arcano dropped a close 112-pound decision to UNLV's Vinh Thai and senior James Monk fell in another narrow decision UC Davis' Colin Schmidt at 156 pounds.
Army won its sixth team title in seven years, while Air Force finished second and Navy took third.
