For Starters, in 1997 the football field was renovated. The renovation began after the 1996 season ended and was completed 8 months later. The original playing surface including 11,250 tons of rootzone material was removed and replaced with a state-of-the-art sand-based turf system including automated irrigation and enhanced drainage. Randall and Blake, Inc. (RBI) installed the new field at a cost of $788,000. The playing surface is similar to those installed by RBI at Texas A&M, TCU, Coors Field, the Denver Broncos training facility and Oakland Coliseum. There are 1.5 miles of underground drainage pipe and 27 miles of electric heating cables under the playing surface. Ten miles of control and communication wiring were installed to support the automated irrigation and heating systems and the coach's headsets. The 14" growing medium consists of 2,800 tons of pea gravel installed over a native soil base then 5,600 tons of a specially-mixed sand and humus "rootzone" was added. Nearly 500 pounds of Kentucky Blue and perennial Rygrass seed was then planted. The Astroturf bench areas have also been removed which makes the stadium more versatile for sports such as lacrosse and soccer. In 1996 the Athletic Department purchased a Fairtron score and video board similar to the one at Sky Sox Stadium in Colorado Springs. The video board enables fans to see game replays, videos of past Falcon greats, player photos and in-depth statistics. In 1994/95 new grandstand bleachers were installed on the east concourse area increasing the seating capacity to 52,237. The press box building underwent a major renovation in 1991 with the addition of 9 skybox suites. The facility now seats 691 people indoors. In 1993 the second level was expanded and now accommodates up to 500 people for a sit down dinner. This area is rented out throughout the year for meetings, banquets receptions, weddings and other special events. Falcon Stadium was completed in 1962 at a cost of $3.5 million. Funding for the construction was through donations from active duty Air Force personnel, corporations and private citizens. The stadium is constructed in a natural bowl and stands in the base of the Rampart Range of the Rocky Mountains. Falcon Stadium opened on Sept 22, 1962, when a then overflow crowd of 41,350 saw Air Force defeat Colorado State, 24-0. The Academy held a formal dedication on Oct, 20 1962, when Air Force hosted Oregon. The Ducks won the game 35-20. The stadium was originally built solely for football, but several non-athletic events such as the Academy's annual graduation, concerts, and other special events are conducted here.
