This week in Air Force athletics

With last Saturday's 28-23 win over New Mexico, Air Force football has quietly accumulated three consecutive conference victories and stands within striking distance of Boise State for the top spot in the league.  At 3-1 in MWC play the Falcons are gridlocked in a four-way tie for second place in the standings.  Incoming Nevada (6-2, 3-1) is one of the teams that Air Force hopes to break away from and looks to make ground in that department this Friday.  The meeting will be the first ever between the schools.  Tickets are available for just $5 in the overlook section of Falcon Stadium and four packs can be purchased for just $60 in any section with an additional voucher for $20 in concessions.  Click Here for more information.

Air Force rifle team at OSU in Columbus

The Air Force Academy rifle team opens the season with two matches at Ohio State in Columbus this weekend, Oct. 12-13, at the OSU Rifle Range.  According to head coach Launi Meili, the team is excited to start shooting regular season matches.  "Other schools have started their competitions and our practice scores have been very competitive with what we've seen posted so far."

On Friday, the Falcons have a match against Ohio State.  "We open against No. 3-ranked Ohio State and I feel confident we'll give them a tough match right from the start."  On Saturday, Oct. 13, the Falcons compete against West Virginia at OSU.  "The match against WVU on Saturday is going to be our toughest match of the season, added Meili.

Meili said, TCU and WVU have shot some phenomenal scores already, some records in fact, and are already positioning themselves as the top teams in the country.  This first weekend will give us an indication of where we stack up in the country and give us an idea of what we need to work on.

Our returning shooters are continuing to improve their scores and our freshmen have been setting personal bests almost every time they shoot.  Coach Anti and I can't wait to see them put it on the line this weekend at OSU.

The Air Force Academy fencers will be in St. Louis, Mo., this weekend (Oct. 12-15) to compete in the North American Cup Div. 1 and 2 tournaments at the America's Center Convention complex.  The NAC is the first of several tournaments the Falcons will compete in this season.

"The NACs always showcase some of the best fencers in the country. It will be a tough tournament for our cadets since they will be facing some of the best of the best," said head coach Abdel Salem.  "Our fencers are capable of having some good performances."

Venue: America's Center Convention Complex - Halls 4 & 5 701 Convention Plaza
