    Air Force Water Polo Media Guide Available

    Air Force Water Polo Picked to Finish Fifth in WWPA

    In the 2011 Western Water Polo Association Preseason Coaches Poll released Tuesday, Air Force has been selected to finish fifth in the league. Loyola Marymount, which has won the last four WWPA titles, is once again the favorite to win the conference, claiming nine first-place votes and 119 points in the coaches poll.

     

    UC Davis earned one first place vote and 107 points to earn second place while UC San Diego had two first place votes and 102 points to place third. Santa Clara rounded out the top-four with 92 points.

     

    Rounding out the rest of the poll were Air Force (79 points) at No. 5, Redlands (65) at No. 6, Claremont (64) at No. 7 and Pomona-Pitzer (60) at No. 8, followed by Whittier, Chapman, Occidental and La Verne.  

     

    The top four seeds based on the regular season will earn byes in the 2011 WWPA Championships held Nov. 17-20 at UC San Diego. The annual tournament has been expanded by a day and will begin on Thursday with four first round games that will see No. 5 play No. 12, No. 6 taking on No. 11, No. 7 facing No. 10 and No. 8 playing No. 9. The winners will then face the top four seeds in the quarterfinals on Nov. 18. The championship game is slated for Sunday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m.

     

    The Falcons open up the 2011 season this weekend, Sept. 3-4, at the Triton Invitational, hosted by WWPA foe UC San Diego.

    BIG WEEK FOR AIR FORCE ATHLETICS

    The Academy is buzzing in anticipation of the football season opener on Saturday, but that's not all that is going on during a packed schedule of Falcon athletics on base this week.  Volleyball is ready for takeoff after a huge win on the road at Navy this past weekend. The Falcons return to the Springs tonight to take on Northern Colorado in their home opener.  First serve is set for 7pm.  Admission is only $2 for youth and $5 for adults.  The first 200 fans will receive a free AFA long-sleeve t-shirt at the gate.  The men's and women's soccer teams also both coming off big road wins will be at home for a doubleheader over the weekend.  The women rallied to beat Eastern Washington 3-2 on Sunday (click here to read more), and the men took a beating to Houston Baptist, 5-2, to start their season with a "W" (click here to read more).  The women will kick things off for the first leg of the twin bill hosting Northern Colorado this Friday starting at 5 pm from the Cadet Soccer Stadium.  Shortly following, the men will take the field against Davidson at around 7:30 pm.  Admission is free for both events.  And then of course the big one on Saturday, as a Falcon team that many consider a darkhorse MWC contender will take flight in their 2011 campaign against South Dakota.  It's a high noon kickoff from Falcon Stadium and tickets are still available from $5 and up.  Click here to view the ticket promotions on tap for this Saturday.  Season tickets are also still available for the best prices in college football.  Falcon fans have again shown unbelievable support in the offseason with season ticket numbers pushing nearly 18,000, up close to 1,000 from a year ago.  Thank you for your support.  If you haven't yet done so and want to lock in your season tickets before game #1 click here.       

     

    Coach Calhoun's Radio Show - Tonight  - Join Coach Calhoun at Back East Bar & Grill tonight to talk Falcon football leading into the season.  Coach's radio show will go on the air with KVOR 740 am host Jim Arthur @ 6:30 pm and Back East will have food and drink specials going on after work for anyone that wants to stop by for happy hour.

    Friday Football Luncheon - September 2nd - Join Falcon fans at the Falcon Stadium pressbox this Friday for the Friday football luncheon.  This week's lunch will be provided by Golden Corral.  The menu includes salisbury steak, bourbon street chicken, rice, glazed carrots, garden salad and chocolate brownies.  Stop by for some great food, prizes, and a chance to hear from Coach Calhoun before this weekend's game.  $10 admission at the door, lunch starts at 11 am and doors open at 10:30am.

     

    Men's and Women's Soccer Doubleheader - September 2nd- Falcon men's and women's soccer will both be in action this Friday from the Cadet Soccer Stadium for a doubleheader starting at 5 pm.  The women will kick things off against Northern Colorado at 5 and the men will follow with the nightcap at 7:30 pm as they host Davidson.  Admission is free to both games.  Click here to view the men's and women's schedules for the remainder of the season.

     

    Football Season Opener - September 3rd - The long awaited Falcon football season is finally here.  Tickets for this Saturday's opener are still available for as low as $5 in the Falcon Stadium overlook sections.  It is also Family Day at the Academy which means ticket packages including four seats to the game and $20 in concessions coupons are available for only $60!  Season tickets are also still available for starting at only $60 all the way up to 50 yard line club seats for only $275!  Click here for more ticket information.

    Ayesha Hein Named Air Force Athlete of the Week

    Ayesha Hein capped off a stellar debut weekend for the Air Force volleyball team with all-tournament team honors at the Kristen Dickmann Invitational (Aug. 26-27). The Honolulu, Hawaii, native amassed a team-best 26 kills, .333 hitting percentage, seven service aces and five blocks as the Falcons opened the season with three matches in Annapolis, Md.

     

    Hein helped Air Force to its first true road win since early 2009, as the Falcons defeated service academy rival Navy in straight sets. She scored the final points for Air Force during the first (service ace) and third (kill) sets. She also led the team in kills during the matches against Bowling Green (11) and St. John's (9).

     

    Air Force opens the home season on Tuesday, Aug. 30, when it hosts in-state rival Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. The Falcons then travel to Denver for the Pioneers' tournament on Sept. 1-2.

    Weekly happenings

    WOMEN'S SOCCER OPENS UP 2011 WITH A PAIR OF HOME WINS The Falcon women's soccer team started their 2011 campaign in impressive fashion by scoring 8 goals in two wins over the weekend.  Friday's contest saw the Falcons go down 1-0 in the 7th minute before reeling off four unanswered goals against Colorado Mines.  Junior Eryn Avjian led the way for Air Force with two goals including the game tying score and go ahead tally.  On Sunday, the Falcons continued their offensive assault putting up another four goals against CSU Pueblo.  The matinee was highlighted by a hat rick from Freshman McKenna Fox.  The performance marked the first time a Falcon had scored three goals in a game since 2001.  Defensively Air Force only allowed two shots on net to help Freshman goaltender Hannah Schwartz post a shutout.  For more information on this weekend's games click here.  The Falcons will hit the road this Friday for a tournament in Boise and then return home on September 2nd to host Northern Colorado @ 5 pm.  To view the 2011 schedule click here.

    KID'S DAY WITH AIR FORCE FOOTBALL THIS SATURDAY 

    Mark your calendars for this Saturday, August 20th for a fun afternoon at Falcon Stadium with the Air Force Football team.  Gates will open at 9:30 am for an open practice and scrimmage.  Fans are invited to come preview the team and then stick around to meet the players and coaches down on the field for autographs and photos.  We'll keep the South side of the stadium open from the 50 into the endzone for kids to play catch.  Autographs will begin shortly after practice at 11:45 and go until around 1pm.  Concessions will be available for fans around lunch time.  Admission is free and open to the general public.

    Toast to the Host Football Kickoff This Saturday Join Falcon fans for an Air Force football kickoff party on the Cadet Gym Terrazzo this Saturday from 11 am to 1:30 pm.  Fans in attendance will get a preview of the team during an open practice, admission to a beer and wine tasting festival and access to great food from local restaurants.  Following practice Coach Calhoun will stop by to talk about the upcoming season and visit with everyone out on the Terrazzo.  Should be a great time for kids as well with free ice cream, a visit from the bird opportunity to get autographs with the team.  For tickets to the 2nd annual Toast to the Host, click here.

    Coaches Tour With Coach Calhoun - Coach Calhoun will be hitting the road for the second leg of his Coaches Tour next week.  If you live up in the Denver area, be sure to stop by Rock Bottom Brewery at Park Meadows Mall after work for some great food and drink specials and a visit with Coach Calhoun.  Coach will be by the Brewery at 6 pm for a meet and greet with fans and will then talk to the crowd about this upcoming season and answer any questions regarding the state of Falcon Football.

    Second Annual Toast to the Host this Saturday

    Join other Falcon fan for a celebration of the start of the 2011 Air Force Football season at Toast to the Host, a pre-season party and beer and wine tasting. The party will take place on August 6th from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Cadet Terrazzo.

    The cost is just $25 per person to enjoy samples from beer, wine and food vendors while watching the Falcon football practice from the terrazzo area and volleyball practice inside the East Cadet Gym.
