VOLLEYBALL TRYING TO BUILD ON LAST YEAR'S SUCCESS IN FALCON COURT AT EAST GYM

Last Fall the Falcon Volleyball team welcomed record crowds into their new home in the East Gymnasium. Over 7,000 rolled through the gates to support first year Head Coach Matt McShane and his team in their quest to turn the Air Force volleyball program into a competitor in the Mountain West Conference.  The place was transformed into a madhouse on match nights, truly a home court advantage.  For those who have yet to see a match in the new venue, it's almost like playing inside a drum.  It's loud, it's hot, and fans are right on top of the court.  Add that to the altitude and it's a potent dose for opponents to handle.   The results were certainly reflective as the Falcons captured their first conference match in 3 years with a convincing 3-1 win of San Diego State at home.  This season promises even more excitement as the team ushers in a stacked class of Freshman to compliment an already young but experienced lineup hungry to take the next step.  To get in on the action, check out our great ticket prices by clicking here.  Packages for 2011 are the most affordable offered at the Academy for any sport.  Fans can reserve their seats at all 11 home matches for only $10 for youth, $25 for adults or $39 for family four packs.  Thanks again for your support we hope to see you all out at Falcon Court at East Gym this Fall to have some fun and cheer on the Falcons as they head for new heights.

Robert Drye Named AFA Athlete of the Week

    | No TrackBacks

Robert Drye had a stellar weekend at the 2011 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships over the May 13-14 weekend, becoming the program's first conference champion in the hammer throw, while tossing an Academy-record distance of 209'11". In addition, the junior recorded career-best marks in his other two events (shot put, discus throw) to earn points for the Falcons.

Posting a throw of 209'11" on his final attempt, Drye improved his overall distance in the hammer throw by seven feet to win the 13-competitor event by the same margin. With that toss, Drye shattered Vern Conaway's previous Academy standard of 203'10" that had stood since 1992. He also became the Academy's first hammer throw champion in any conference (Western Athletic Conference or Mountain West Conference) and moved into 19th in the national rankings.

In addition to his Academy record-setting, title-winning performance in the hammer throw, the native of Las Vegas, Nev., also set career-best marks in the shot put and discus throw with scoring finishes. Drye led four Falcons to scoring finishes in the shot put, after placing fifth with a distance of 53'10ΒΌ", while finishing sixth in the discus throw behind a throw of 165'6" - a personal-improvement of over five feet.

Drye and select Air Force teammates will open NCAA action on May 26-28, with the preliminary round of competition in Eugene, Ore.

Capt. Michal P. Polidor, a 2004 Air Force Academy graduate, was presented the 2011 Colonel James Jabara Award for Airmanship Friday today in Mitchell Hall. He distinguished himself through his heroic actions in an Operation Enduring Freedom sortie supporting United States and Afghan National Army ground forces.

As a cadet, Polidor earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in 2004 as he carried a 3.9 grade point average as an astronautical engineering major. A two-time academic all-district selection, Polidor was named the Air Force Academy's scholar-athlete of the year and the College Hockey America conference student athlete of the year in 2004. The Imperial, Penn., native was the team's starting goaltender for three seasons and played in 95 games, the sixth most in school history.

Captain Polidor is currently a member of the Air Force Global Strike Command, and assigned at Whiteman AFB, Mo.  On Oct. 3, 2009, Captain Polidor was the Flight Lead of an F-15E Strike Eagle two-ship tasked to support Coalition Observation Post Keating in the Nuristan province of Afghanistan.  More than 80 coalition soldiers were pinned down and taking fire from a well-orchestrated 360-degree attack of 250 Taliban insurgents in the steep and rugged Kamdesh Valley.

Shortly after arriving on station, Captain Polidor assumed the Tactical Air Control-Airborne role, deconflicting aircraft and establishing a communications relay amid smoke, approaching thunderstorms, and radio communication that was severely degraded by the surrounding terrain

During his 7.8-hour sortie, Captain Polidor was able to coordinate and integrate 19 aircraft, to include F-15Es, A-10s, AH-64s and a B-1, orchestrating precision strikes on the enemy.  He expertly expended four bombs and executed a perfect 20mm strafe against a target in close proximity to friendly forces.  He also performed a battle damage check for his wingman, who experienced a severe hydraulics failure.

Low on fuel, Captain Polidor continued to orchestrate incoming air assets while aerial refueling.  Over 30,000 pounds of ordnance and 170 rounds of strafe eliminated enemy strongholds, saving 72 American and Afghan National Army lives.

Capt. Polidor joins an extremely exclusive group, becoming the fiftieth Air Force Academy graduate selected for the Jabara Award.  Among the previous winners are such notable alumni as Vietnam War heroes Karl Richter and Steve Ritchie, pioneering astronaut Karol Bobko, and Hudson River landing pilot Chesley Sullenberger.

Established in 1967, the award is presented to an Academy graduate, living or deceased, whose actions directly associated with an aerospace vehicle set him or her apart from contemporaries.

The award is jointly presented on behalf of the Academy, the Association of Graduates, and the Jabara family.  Col. Jabara was the first jet ace and the second leading ace in the Korean War.    Captain Polidor was excited and humbled to learn he had won the Jabara Award.  "I am tremendously honored to be receiving this award from the Jabara Family, the AOG, and the Air Force Academy," he said.  "Adding my name to a list of [distinguished] aviators is a very proud moment in my Air Force career.
